Five Things I Am Looking Forward To Buying

There are things I look forward to buying. Here are five of them.

Okami

September 5th — Everything I've seen about this game has me excited. The Zelda-like gameplay. The incredible art direction and woodblock-print visuals. The plot — being a wolf god who restores light and beauty back to a world devoid of color. (Instead of, say, being a dude and shooting zombie flame alien rocket gun skull heart ghosts, again.) Okami looks like it may be one of the best video games of the year — and when you can only play maybe 4 or 5 of those, tops, that's a pretty exciting prospect indeed. I really look forward to this game.

Sony Ericsson K790a

September? — I currently rock a K750i mobile phone (bought from questionable website and unlocked on T-Mobile). It's the best phone I've ever owned. A good screen, responsive UI, nice basic IMAP email, seemingly indestructible, and a great 2 megapixel camera. But the new K790a? It's waiting patiently to take over. It adds EDGE network speeds, a 3.2 megapixel camera (!) with real flash (!!), a much higher resolution screen and UI, and support for fancy new push e-mail (via a new extension to IMAP, which I've definitely got to investigate). I feel like the K790a will likely grant me many glorious years of phone greatness. Sure, stupidly, no carrier will likely sell this phone, despite it being for the US market, but I'll find it, somewhere. (Let me know if you do!)

Rhythm Tengoku

August 3rd (Japan) — What happens when the Wario Ware team makes a rhythm game? Now we know. The goal is to follow an on-screen rhythm, while the game does everything in its power to distract you. The more you play, the more distracting it gets. Here are some gameplay movies, and here's what you won't look like when you're playing it. I don't know if it'll be good, but I'm excited to find out, and I don't have to wait much longer! Yay!

TiVo Series 3

Soon — Soon, as in, please be soon. Please. I've been thinking about you a lot. And while I may quietly dump you if an iAppleVo comes out, for now, I think we could be best friends. With your native high-definition support (hooray!), your dual CableCARD slots to allow me to record two HD streams at once if I was that insane, your ability to add on an external hard drive for additional storage, your sleek new hardware design , and your classic user experience that puts any other solution to shame — well, there are fewer things I look forward to this year than finally watching high definition television on my high definition television. (Watch it live? C'mon! If I can't watch TV when I want to watch it, in the year 2006, I might as well drive around town in a horse-drawn zepplin listening to victrolas on my chronograph.)

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

November 3rd — I am so excited for this movie that it literally makes me physically tingle. Even the poster makes me unfathomably happy. It's a strange sensation that leads to an immediate mental response of terrible superstition, self-consciousness, and preparation for dashed hopes — this movie can't possibly turn out as good as I imagine it to be, can it? Therefore, I'll just say this: I dream, in my rich forest of dreams underneath the dreaming waterfall, that I will never laugh as hard as I do during this movie. Here's hoping.

So, what are your five?

What about the Wii, Cabel?

I thought it might be a little too obvious. (Like somehow TiVo Series 3 isn't?). It'd probably be #1 on my list, no question.

As much as I like the Wii, I wouldn't put it on a list like this until we have a date and price. If it's $600 (to pick a number out of thin air, one which should never be associated with a game system), it won't be worth it. I know, I know, every other day we have a new "confirmation" that the Wii will be $299, or $250, or $200, or $2.00, but I want to see a sell sheet before I commit.

1) Nintendo Wii - I CAN'T WAIT to bust it out at parties to pull in all the game haters I call friends.

2) A non-white DS Lite that I don't have to import. With a redesigned hinge!

3) OS 10.5 and whatever new laptops are newest at that time. Still chugging along on a 1GHz Ti on Panther. Dying to move over to Intel and a newer OS.

4) I'll cheat a bit and throw in a bundle of games: Okami, (localized) Cooking Mama and Phantom Thief Rousseau, new Phoenix Wright, Guitar Hero II, Final Fantasy XII, and more.

5) A nice, big, comfy reading chair. No idea where to look, though a friend just suggested West Elm in Portland.

I hope you like it, I'm currently waiting to see if the phone references in the latest iPod software update are going to amount to anything, hopefully Apple will help me avoid having to decide between a K800i, a Nokia E70, or the cameraless, but very cool and techie, M600i.

oh, and i get a free upgrade on my carrier so im gonna grab a free HTC Wizard (MDA Vario) but that isnt technically buying :(

I set up borat's (sacha baron cohen's) wireless network - that's my claim to fame.

Penny Arcade Expo. Like E3, but bigger (Well, now it is) Is anyone else going?
Blogger John Zoidberg 8/01/2006 9:57 PM
All I can say about the Borat movie is that it is absolutely hysterical. I went to a test screening of it two weeks ago and the entire film is non-stop laughter. After seeing it, I keep asking myself how this can possibly be released in America with out a NC-17 rating. Just wait. You won't be disappointed at all!
Anonymous Jon Kantro 8/01/2006 11:36 PM
Ohhh, I just hope the Borat movie is better than the Ali G movie was...

The k970a is out in Australia, but down here it's labeled as the k800i. My brother has one and it's by far the nicest phone I've ever used.
Blogger Chris McElligott 8/02/2006 12:47 AM
@Chris: The K800i is actually slightly different to the K790i: it's UMTS rather than EDGE.

The K800i (which I have had since mid-July) is incredible: the brightest, clearest screen I've seen on a phone, iSync/Salling Clicker support (of course: it's a SonyEricsson), a not-entirely-awful camera, and various improvements throughout the OS.

It's generally superb: very good choice, Cabel, and I hope you find one!

As for my list (in no particular order)

* Apple Mac Pro Quad Ultra Mega Intel Behemoth God Bastard
* A new desk/chair - I have an electric/gas powered sit-stand desk at work, and want one at home (along with a sufficiently cool chair to match)
* Nintendo Wii + games
* Gears of War

Nooooooo, don't buy the phone! I own a Sony with a joystick. So have many, many of my friends - and they all break!
Anonymous Anonymous 8/02/2006 1:42 AM
:D The K790a is going to be amazing. There are rumors floating around though that it either won't be available in the US at all (which isn't a problem, so long as does get released it can always be imported) or it'll go to Cingular, in which case we'll be waiting til sometime next year.
Anonymous Sleepie 8/02/2006 5:17 AM
1) Transmit 4 with a unified toolbar
2) Tesla Roadster (looking forward to seeing, not buying)
3) Mac OS X 10.5
4) My new work computer comes today, with two 23" cinema displays!!!
5) My son to be old enough to school me on our Nintendo Wii when it comes out

Strawberry Luna has this Iron & Wine with Calexico poster that would look nice in my office.

Two Nintendo DS games to be released before Christmas:
Clubhouse Games: 42 games in one game including Poker, Chess, Checkers, Darts, Billiards, Dominoes, Rummy, Spit, etc. which sounds nice, but being able to play people all over the world on WiFi makes it sound even better. Only if there was a “gambling module!”

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin: Even the name sounds cool and sinister. IGN wrote:”From what we’ve played thus far, it really isn’t a question of whether or not Portrait of Ruin is amazing, rather it’s a question of just how amazing it is.” Add WiFi gaming to Castlevania and wham! Sounds good to me.

The shirt entitled "Pegasucks" from WOWCH.

The still unreleased to DVD film that is in my top 3 of all time: Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Veronique

Hmmm... I like the 3.2 megapixel... Why are we so far behind on that cameraphone feature?

If you don't want to wait (or if the price is like $700 when it comes out) you should check out the W810i. I just got one and it's a great phone. And quad-band so I can take it with me to Australia in a few months. :)
Blogger jake 8/02/2006 8:50 AM
"I own a Sony with a joystick. So have many, many of my friends - and they all break!"
In the K750i, SonyEricsson improved the joystick housing (because the 'breakage' is actually dust in the contacts). They've improved it even further for the K800i, apparently.

Are GBA games region-free? I wonder how import-friendly Rhythm Heaven would be?

I'm looking forward to Starfox Command for the DS (recently received a 32/40 rating from Famitsu), Every Extend Extra for the PSP, and I wish I could get an Xbox 360 simply for the Live Arcade offerings on tap (Small Arms, Lumines Live, SFII, etc.).
Anonymous Jeff 8/02/2006 1:28 PM
jeff: I have a Japanese DS Phat and a European DS Lite and Japanese and European games and they all play nice together.

1) Games. Wii + Zelda, Wario, Metroid, etc. etc. Rhythm Tengoku is now high on my list. Videos of cute girls playing games.. What a concept. ... Anyway, just, eh, mentally add the usual slew of hip DS games here.
2) 10.5 Big-ass cat, the Finder better be improved, though....
3) There is no step 3
4) Launching my new business where cute girls play games all day

...what was I doing again?

Okay, Ima go with:

Mario Hoops 3-on-3 for Nintendo DS. I played some Mario Soccer on Gamecube at Afryl's, and it pretty much ruled. Hoops? Hell yeah. Coming to a store near you on 9/11! (Awkward...)

Star Wars Trilogy DVD set, UNALTERED. Ever since giving up both my Laserdisc player and my VCR, I've had no source for pure unadulterated Star Wars.

MacBook Pro, 2nd revision. Who buys the first rev of a new Apple product? (Oops, I guess I do (iPod nano).) I'm hoping there will be a physical redesign along the lines of the MacBook.

A phone. If there's an Apple phone, I am quite sure I will buy it. Otherwise, I'm leaning toward Sidekick 3 (holla to stevenf). It's really hard to puzzle through the possibilities of cell phones, though. For instance: Which is more important, ability to use phone as high(ish)-speed modem for my laptop (& Nokia 770), or quality screen and web-browsing capability on the device itself? Questions like these paralyze me.

Clear Creek Eau De Vie Douglas Fir. It's booze made of trees!
Anonymous joshbzin 8/03/2006 9:33 AM
I would say a Intel iMac 20inch, but i already bought that 3 days ago !!!

:-D!

I also got a 30 gig iPod for 90 bucks with an Education discount! Thx god my mom works at a UC!

Hmm what else:

1. To be totally original: a Wii, with games.

2. Again, originality: A 360, for Halo 3 and Gears of War

3. Dono, i have lots of money, just dono what to buy... I have so many "toys" i cant fit em in my pocket.
Blogger .Smith. 8/06/2006 1:56 PM
1. Wii
2. Red Steel
3. Metroid Prime 3
4. Black DS Lite
5. Mario Hoops 3x3 DS
Anonymous mark 8/07/2006 4:13 AM
1. Mario Hoops DS.

2. A nice new bicycle. Not too expensive, but not chain store crap. Probably a Trek hybrid.

3. iPod nano for the wife.

4. MacBook to replace my aging Powerbook 12".

5. ? (I need to keep a slot open for surprise Apple products).

Oh, and Jeff, GBA and DS games are region-free. Import away, my friend! I highly recommend bit Generations: Orbital as an import. And I think I'll get that Rhythm Tengoku Cabel was talking about.
Anonymous Anonymous 8/07/2006 3:14 PM
I saw a preview of Borat too. Seriously, that movie is great. Don't even worry about it... you will love it.
Anonymous Anonymous 8/07/2006 3:48 PM
I've recently bought the K800i (which is basicly the same as the K790i, it's just a 3G phone (UTMS))...

And I am very impressed! The pictures it takes is just stunning! Take a look at these pictures from this weekend, http://picasaweb.google.com/madslarsen/StellaPolaris06

Previously I also had the K750i but this is just so much better! It also features a clever thing when writing text.messages, where it guesses what the next word you are going to write is, based on previous text-messages...

Woot

5: Upgrade laptop motherboard

4: New Camera Lens for Olympus E-300

3: Nintendo Wii

2: New Shell Casing for DS Lite
http://www.dsfanboy.com/2006/08/08/ds-replacement-shells/

1: Microsoft Zune Baby! LOL, Don't get me wrong, I'm currently owning a 5g iPod :D
Blogger Aerodyna 8/10/2006 2:32 PM
Maybe the Zune that was dreamt up. However, the one that will be delivered will be late and include 30% of the features rumored.
Anonymous Jim Renaud 8/10/2006 8:45 PM
The K790a has finally shown up on Amazon.com (listing). None of the online phone sellers have it listed yet.
Anonymous Anonymous 8/11/2006 9:45 AM
I'm sure the Borat movie will be as good as expected, even the trailer made me laugh!
I'm from the town that Sascha Baron Cohen's from. He's a legend round here!
Blogger Cal 8/11/2006 10:23 AM
I can't wait for the K790a!!! I have a k750i right now and I love it! Best phone I've ever had. I'm sure the next one will be even better I mean 3.2 megapixel camera? Can't wait...
